Friends of Emley

Chris Hoyle

Cornet Player

Chris was principal cornet at Emley until July 2006, he led the band with great aplomb during his time on the top chair! Fortunately for us, he's back around the band regularly as a friend and a dep, it's great to have such great brass playing talent just a phone call away!

Russ Fenton

Cornet Player

Russ is a regular at Emley, he previously played at Brighouse and Rastrick but now likes to spend more time with his family. That's to our benefit, Russ lives in the Village and is a registered member of the band, whenever  we are short, Russ is always willing to come down and help out at short notice. It's fabulous to have such a great cornet player just a phone call away!

When Russ isn't with Emley he likes large quantities of bitter, playing with his two children and walking his Labrador!

Kelly Saunders

Euphonium Player

Kelly is a friend of the band from "down south" She lives in Exmouth but has done several band jobs when travelling north to see her boyfriend! She says she prefers Yorkshire to Devon any day!!

When she's not helping Emley out, Kelly plays for Southwest Telecoms Lympstone band, drinks Malibu and Coke and looks after her two fish - Bubble and Squeak!

Esther Brown

Groupie

Esther is married to Gary and she gets dragged to most of the band events! It's always nice to have a friendly face in the audience!

When Esther's not with Emley she enjoys large quantities of cobra beer? Keeping Gary in order now they're married and looking after their baby!

Thelma and Louise

aka Joyce and Nancy

Groupies

Joyce and Nancy can be found at most Emley jobs, especially the more social ones!! They're both keen to help the band out, Nancy organised a Coffee Evening in the bandroom and raised £135!! Garry called them Thelma and Louise because they're always together when we see them and the name's kind of stuck!! Oops!

Gill Lightowler

Supporter

Gill is long time girlfriend of our Bass Trombone player Kevin, Gill is an ex- flautist but we haven't talked her into taking up brass quite yet!

Gill enjoys a glass of wine, crafts and keeping Kev busy with jobs to do around the house.

Trish and John Moore

Groupies

Trish and John are the proud parents of our wonderful Sop player and come to most concerts and contests, they're always cheerful and shouting the band on.

Pic - our precious new sop mute! Those things are dear!

Nichola Baxter

Nichola has supported the band with great enthusiasm since her boyfriend Matt rejoined on Cornet. She has followed the band to all contests and has also attended every concert which she has been available for!

She bought an Emley badge on the coach to Pontins and proudly wears it on her coat every day.

Matt has tried persuading her to join in Percussion 3, but she's having none of it. (Yet!)

Pete Toon

Soprano

Pete stepped into the breech in Feb 2005 when our regular soprano player Al Moore had to miss the Yorkshire Areas. Pete's played in the past with York Railway Institute and Stape Silver Band.

When he's not helping Emley out Pete is an actor, enjoys a brandy and a glass of red wine and has been known by all the kids in York as "The Fat Controller" (NRM Thomas week).

Alison MacDonald

Cornet Player

Alison played on the front row at Emley in 2003/04, sadly she had to relocate for work and left in October 2004. We miss her excellent bandsmanship and great playing on the front row. Alison pops back in whenever she's up in Yorkshire (she'd better do!!) and we're hoping to see her in Harrogate 2005 with her new southern band!!

When not with Emley Alison enjoys large quantities of lager, playing in the dirt and muck and watching films!

Tim Hicks

Trombonist

Tim has been a regular deputy at Emley since Jan 2004 when he signed to fill the second trombone seat for the Yorkshire Areas. Since then we've seen him at various contests and concerts and some of the social events too!

When he's not helping Emley out Tim enjoys decorating his house, going to concerts with his dad, singing and playing the piano!

Claire Hudson

Groupie

Claire's whole family are involved in Emley Brass, Dad David (Trombone) Mum Margaret (secretary) and brother Drew (contest secretary & Timp player) so she can always be found around supporting the band, helping with raffles and collections or eating pie and peas (shown in picture) she was also a valuable member of our Cheerleading squad at the Football day (see photo's page!)

When Claire's not following Emley round she enjoys large quantities of tea, eating lots of biscuits and chocolate and playing with her cat

Kieran Brice and Sam Tainton

Soprano and Horn

Kieran and Sam usually come as a pair to help us out. They play for Stanley Newmarket band. Kieran, although a Soprano player, has also helped out on Cornet too. Sam has filled in on all three horn seats (not at the same time!) They are great deps and always try and do some rehearsals too!

When not with Emley they spend their time with Stanley Newmarket band and the Yorkshire Evening Post ensemble.

            Grange Moor Brass Band

Local Band

At Emley we have a very close local band in Grange Moor (2 miles) we are fortunate that we have a great relationship with everyone at Grange Moor. Their players help us out when we're short (and we do the same for them) and this creates the right atmosphere in which bands should compete! Grange Moor were promoted to the 3rd section in 2005, to the 2nd section in 2006 and to the 1st section in 2007! We wish them every success.

This picture is the band marching through the village after winning the Yorkshire area 4th section 2004 (they'd had a few!)

Phil

(ex-) Band Barman

Phil was the regular barman in the Green Dragon, the regular band pub, frequented after every rehearsal and most concerts!! He's a star, always has a smile even when all 25 of us turn up at once. Since the Green Dragon closed in 2007, we've moved on to the White Horse, where we've been made to feel very welcome - Phil now props up the same side of the bar as we do!

Mike Howley

Euphonium

Mike is Principal Euphonium at the Brighouse and Rastrick band, he's good friends with Garry and often gets roped in pre-contest to give us some different thoughts on our test piece's, he also gets collared from time to time to help when we have a few missing!

Mike enjoys a pint of almost anything, teaching brass to Bradford's finest and a round of golf!

Cary Shepherd & Liz Boulby

Bass Trom & Horn

Cary and Liz played with the band for 3 years until they moved down to Warwickshire in Jan 2007. Liz was treasurer with the band for most of that time and is a big part of the stable finances we enjoy! Cary just made loads and loads of noise!!

They have a beautiful daughter, Isabelle. Enjoy drinking red wine & playing with their cats.

Eddie Wynn

BBb Bass

Eddie played with the band from 2000-04. He was the local vicar in Emley and Flockton until 2004 when he left to join the RAF as Padre. We wish him every success in his future ventures and hope he finds a suitable band near his new base!!

In preparation of his fitness Eddie ran the London Marathon in 2004 in a time of 2hrs 58mins, and raised £4000 for Cancer charities at the same time!

Tim Sidwell

Drum Kit/Bass/Euph/Trom . . . .

Tim is an old friend of Garry's, we regularly use him to fill a variety of seats, especially Kit where he's an amazing drummer! He'll play nearly anything down the bottom end of the band too!

Keith Lawton

Euphonium

Keith played with Emley between Sept 2003 and Aug 2004 mostly on Solo Euphonium. Sadly for us he had an offer of higher section banding with one of his local bands. It was a big loss to us, Keith was an excellent friend, musician and bandsman (you'd be amazed what we could fit in his Celica) We wish him well in his future endeavours and we know we'll see him down t' pub soon.

Martin Chapman & Charlotte Wraithmell

Bass Trombone & Cornet

Martin played with Emley until June 2003 when he left to pursue his career as Marine Musician.  He still pops back to play with us when he's home and he seems to be enjoying the army life (he already had the hair - see pic!)

Charlotte played with Emley until Aug 2004 when she left to go to Burton College. We wish her well in her studies and hope to see her when she passes by.

Ellie Sandbrook

Drum Kit

Ellie was with Emley up until Dec 2006, She studied for her Music degree at Huddersfield and came along for a bash at the same time. As you can see she had an infectious smile!! She moved on to play with Sellers International.

She's a mad Jenson Button fan, and as you can see enjoys a glass of the bubbly!
